Wisconsin Unclaimed Property Finder Information

  • The locator fee is limited to 20% of the value of the property.

  • Agreements to pay compensation between locators of missing owners and any owner/heir are NOT enforceable until 12 months after the date the property is remitted to the State Treasurer.

  • Any agreement to locate, deliver, recover or assist in the recovery of property presumed abandoned which is entered into by or on behalf of the owner of the property must:
    • 1. Be in writing.
    • 2. Include the notarized signature of the owner.
    • 3. Include the owner's name and present address.
    • 4. Include a description of the property.
    • 5. Include the value of the property.
    • 6. Include a statement of the fee or other compensation to be paid by the owner, which may not exceed 20% of the actual value of the property recovered.
    • 7. Include a clear and prominent statement disclosing the name and address of the holder and whether the property has been paid to the State Treasurer.

  • Every claim filed with this office must include the following:
    • 1. Our official claim form.
    • 2. A signed and notarized contract including all information as described in item (3) above.
    • 3. Documentary evidence of ownership.

  • All claims will be paid directly to the owner and the agent (locator) will be responsible for collecting any "finder's fee" from the owner.

  • All claims are reviewed by State Treasury personnel. You will be notified within 90 days if your claim is approved or if additional information is needed to complete the approval process.

  • Wisconsin does not require that an heirfinder be licensed as a private investigator.
