The purpose of the New Mexico Unclaimed Property Office is to reunite lost or unclaimed property with their owners. Unclaimed property is considered abandoned when it remains unclaimed for the number of years prescribed by statute.

Generally, abandoned or unclaimed property includes the following:

  • dormant checking accounts
  • dormant savings accounts
  • uncashed money orders
  • cashiers checks
  • unclaimed insurance benefits
  • mineral royalty payments
  • safe keeping depository contents
  • unused gift certificates
  • unclaimed security deposits
  • cash dividends
  • stock
  • court deposits
  • utility deposits or refunds

    New Mexico has certain procedures and forms to use when claiming unclaimed property. Until the property is claimed, New Mexico holds the assets as costodian for the rightful owner.
