Official Web Site (Nebraska Unclaimed Property) (Visit this siteExternal Link to Official Web Site (Nebraska Unclaimed Property))

The Nebraska Unclaimed Property Division is responsible for returning money, stocks, bonds, dividends, utility deposits, gift certificates, vendor payments and insurance proceeds of any type to the rightful owners.

Unclaimed property is turned over to the State Treasurer's Office every year by companies from across the country. Once you've had unclaimed property, chances are you'll have it again, so visit this site periodically to check for unclaimed property. All unclaimed properties are held forever, subject to claim by the rightful owner or heirs.

These are the most common examples of unclaimed property:

  • Health claim payments
  • Dividends
  • Telephone deposits
  • Life insurance proceeds
  • Vendor payments
  • Wages
  • Stocks
  • Bonds
  • Utility deposits
  • Miscellaneous outstanding checks
  • Safety deposit boxes
  • Gift certificates

Generally, property goes unclaimed because checks aren't cashed or there is no activity in an account for a period of time. For example, if you had a savings account and did not withdraw or deposit any money in it for five years and the bank could not contact you, the bank would remit the money from your account to the State Treasurer. It would then be the State Treasurer's responsibility to try to locate you and return your money.
