The Georgia Department of Revenue collects from holders any unclaimed property that has been abandoned by its owners, and serves as a custodian of the property until the rightful owners can be found and the property returned.

The Unclaimed Property Section maintains several items of interest to the general public, including forms, publications and unclaimed property search.

The Disposition of Unclaimed Property Act protects the rights of owners of abandoned property and relieves those holding the property of the continuing responsibility to account for the property.

Under the Act, when someone holds property that belongs to someone else, but has lost contact with the owner for a specified period, that holder must remit the property to the State. The Department of Revenue serves as the custodian for any property remitted and allows the owners or their heirs to claim their property in the future.
